Résumé:
This work aims to catalog, analyze and discuss the baptismal records of the Parish of Nossa
Senhora da Piedade (1859-1870), historicizing the social relationship that the first sacrament
of Catholicism made possible in the parental life of enslaved people. It was achieved as a
source of research: baptismal seats; notary records, such as records of purchase, sale,
manumission and court documents, such as post mortem inventories; and the 1872 Brazilian
population census. Under the influence of recent debates on the Social History of Slavery,
these sources were crossed, based on methodologies such as historical demography and the
nominative link of the analyzed individuals, in order to understand the social dynamics of the
subjects enslaved in the backwoods of Paraíba. Based on theoretical references to discuss
crony and sponsorship, we used Solange Pereira Rocha (2007), Luciano Costa Gomes (2013)
and Eduardo de Queiroz Cavalcante (2015). It was questioned whether and how crony
enabled bonds between white, “pardos” and black people and/or the social hierarchy of
masters and slaves.
