Abstract:
Introduction: The use of medicinal plants dates back to the beginning of human history,
being used by various civilizations throughout history until today, however, even coming
from a natural origin, it does not mean being totally healthy and safe for consumption,
because the excessive and indiscriminate use can lead to cases of poisoning. Objective: To
analyze the cases of plant intoxication that occurred in the state of Rio Grande do Norte,
Brazil during the year 2022 according to the age group of the individuals, the level of
education, gender, and the evolution of the intoxication. Methodology: This was a
descriptive, retrospective and quantitative work. A survey of data provided by the Sistema
de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN NET), found on the Ministry of Health
website, on records of cases of plant intoxication in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil
during the year 2022, was carriedout. Results and discussion: In reference to the cases of
poisoning by gender, it was analyzedthat there was a prevalence for the female gender when
compared to the male gender. Within the scope of cases recorded by age group, there was a
considerable level of cases recorded between the ages of 5 and 9 years old and 20 and 39
years old. Meanwhile, when analyzed in relation to the level of education, the highest
occurrence was for cases classified as Ign/white, followed by people with complete high
school education. Finally, regarding the data on cases of intoxication by degree of
evolution, its greatest record was for cure without sequelae. Conclusion: We conclude that
a considerably low number of cases of plant poisoning was registered compared to the state
population, demonstrating a positive aspect in relation to a reduced level of cases of plant
poisoning. However, more studies are still needed to highlight the importance of research in
this area and reduce the chances of the population being exposedto the harmful effects of
plants.
