Resumen:
Dysfunctions that affect the Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ) are characterized by localized
pain in the face and pre-auricular region and/or limitation or difficulty in mandibular
movements, in addition to joint noises. One of the treatments that has been gaining ground is
photobiomodulation with low power laser. Being a non-invasive and low-cost treatment,
where it has been shown to be effective with actions: analgesic anti-inflammatory and
modulator of cell activity. In addition to photobiomodulation, treatment with muscle relaxants
is a treatment modality widely used in TMDs, as they are simple to make, inexpensive,
reversible and the high success rate in the treatment of many painful symptoms caused by
temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is already a reality. The aim of this study was to
compare photobiomodulation protocols associated and not with the use of a muscle relaxant
splint in the treatment of patients with temporomandibular disorders. They were divided into
02 groups, the first group was submitted to 02 sessions per week and concomitant use of
myorelaxing plate and the second group was submitted only to photobiomodulation 02
sessions per week, both groups performed 10 sessions. As a result, it was observed that there
was an improvement in the reduction of the painful symptomatology , and increased mouth
opening in both evaluated groups. The association of plaque with photobiomodulation
showed better results in reducing pain at the end of the sessions, showing a significant
difference, although there was no statistical difference between the two protocols studied and
all patients were satisfied with the treatment performed. t is concluded that, in this way,
photobiomodulation can be indicated as a non-invasive treatment for patients with TMD at the
tested dose and the association of myorelaxing plaque and photobiomodulation potentiates the
reduction of painful symptoms in these patients.
