Dispensando o feioso: a construção da higiene estética em Campina Grande (1930-1960).

Abstract

This dissertation aims to analyze the historical construction of aesthetic hygiene in Campina Grande, between the years 1930 to 1960, focusing on the changes caused in. campinense society front of the discourse hygienist and aesthetic, to be basead on the discourse of urban modernization, interfered in the daily of campinenses. We emphasize throughout the text that the project of cleaning and beautifying the city was founded on the desire to modernize the habits of the population, considered archaic and rooted in rural tradition. This project aimed to discipline the man become adapted to life in the city big and modern, in this sense, we analyze the implementation of projects sanitation of urban space through the construction of system of sanitation and water supply d 'Campina Grande, in 1939 and 1958, and construction of the sewage system of the city. We emphasize also the process of urban reform in this city, effective administration, of Mayor Vergniaud Wanderley, as part of a modernization project, founded on the ideals of urban aesthetics and the reformulation of the postures of the city in early 1950 to adapt the habits of the population living in the city reformed. In accordance with this project disciplines to cleaning and beautification of the urban center, we point the process of social cleansing, through elimination of subjects classified as deviant, by the look unsanitary, "ugly", "immoral" and "delinquent" as were seen and represented, beggars, prostitutes and "minor delinquent" were the subjects included in this category of "abnormal".Theoretically engaged in dialogue with Michel Foucault (1978) and his concept of discipline, to review the procedures for disciplining the use of urban space and the concept of fraud by Michel de Certeau (1994) to discuss the population's resistance to these disciplinary mechanisms The discourses and practices that aimed to build hygiene aesthetics in Campina Grande contributed to the change live in the city, intervening in ways of using urban space, this is public or private, since these changes have led to a gradual break with the old values and customs, with the presupposed of building a modern, hygiene and beautiful.
