The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance and pulsatility indices in the uterine artery during
the first and second trimester of pregnancy. We carried out a longitudinal study on 40 normal women
between the 8th-12th and in the 22th weeks of gestation. Doppler velocimetry was performed in both uterine
arteries on the basis of resistance (RI) and pulsatility (PI) indices. We used a sample volume of 1 mm, a wall
filter of 50 to 100 Hz, and a insonation angle below 60°. The first-trimester uterine artery RI and PI indices
were higher from 8th to 12th than in the 22th weeks of gestation. The first-trimester uterine artery RI and PI
with a notch were 0,83 ± 0,07 and 2,32 ± 0,79 and without a notch were 0,71 ± 0,16 and 1,61 ± 0,78,
respectively. In the second trimester uterine artery RI and PI indices with a notch were 0,59 ± 0,09 and 1,03
± 0,32 and without a notch were 0,44 ± 0,09 e 0,63 ± 0,19, respectively. Uterine artery RI and PI indices are
higher between the 8th-12th than in the 22th weeks of gestation. RI and PI indices are higher in the
presence than in the absence of a uterine artery diastolic notch.
