This research aims to evaluate the influence of the climatic gradient and the intensity of land use on the carbon stocks of three soil classes in the semi-arid region of Paraíba. The study area is the region of Cariri Paraibano, located in the central part of the State of Paraíba, on the Planalto da Borborema. The soil classes for study were selected based on geographic representation, pedological diversity and agroecological interest, namely: Haplic Vertisol, Nátric Planosol and Crômic Luvisol. For each soil in three areas with different climatic conditions (precipitation and temperature), samples were collected for three conditions of use intensity (clearing, pasture and native forest), totaling twenty-seven soil collection points. At each collection point, a profile was opened for identification, description and sampling of horizons, and at four surrounding points. And the variables soil density, organic carbon concentration, carbon stock per horizon, total carbon stock, carbon stock in depth and for the correlations, all the previously mentioned variables added with the chemical analyzes of the soil, obtained in the laboratory, soil depth, altitude and climate data (precipitation and average annual temperature). The results indicate that the different edaphoclimatic conditions and the intensity of land use have a distinct influence on each evaluated soil class and, based on the data correlations, it is possible to state that soils with deeper profiles and in regions with greater precipitation have greater total organic carbon stocks.
