Resumo:
This study aimed at examining the perceptions of in-service teachers about English as a Lingua
Franca (ELF), responding to two questions: (1) What are the perceptions of these in-services teachers
about ELF, and (2) What are the reasons that influence these perceptions about ELF. In order to
answer these two questions, a questionnaire with closed questions was developed and applied with
the twenty-nine graduation students of English Literature from the UFCG, and semi-structured
interviews were conducted with six students selected among the twenty-nine participants. The data
show three aspects: (1) About the pronunciation model of English language, it was found that the
participants believe that the native model of pronunciation is perfect because it seeks to better
understanding, (2) The participants give importance to grammar under the influence of accuracy and
fluency of English, and (3) According to the contact of the textbooks that the participants have, its
culture and education, influenced by the textbook, should turn to the cultivation of native countries of
English.
