Abstract:
On an aesthetic approach, this work had the objective to contribute with a critical analysis of the character
and the action of Carlos de Melo, the narrator that is also the protagonist in Menino de Engenho, Doidinho
and Bangüê, novels that form part of the meganarrative of the sugar-cane, written by José Lins do Rego.
This analysis is justified for the fact that part of the criticism about the novelist is supported on his biography
in order to attribute a sense to his work, particularly in relation to this trilogy. This way, we developed a
bibliographical research, starting from the reading of the works that compose the corpus to, afterwards, read
the theoretical and critical texts. We tried to be attentive to what is constant and what is added in the
character along the three narratives. Thus, we verified that the character of Carlos de Melo oscillates, but it
evolves from novel to novel and it is in Bangüê that the trace of the anti-hero is consolidated.
