Abstract:
This work had the general objective of analyzing students’ performance in answering Brazilian Literature
discursive questions during the 2009 College Entrance Exam at UFCG. The field research which entails
two moments – descriptive and exploratory – was done in the Pre-Entrance Exam Preparation Course (
PVS) at UFCG and at Severino Cabral’s Elementary and Secondary State School. The corpus for the
analysis was made up of a hundred answered exams, 50 from each school. The selection of the corpus
was based on the official answer-sheet provided by the COMPROV, and we based our analysis on the
following criteria: the answers which were closer to the ideal ones, those which were close to the
expected ones, but with candidate’s writing having gaps, and the answers which were far from what was
expected. At the end of the research, as we compared the official answer-sheet with the candidates’
answers regarding discursive questions on Brazilian Literature, we came to the conclusion that the whole
reading of the literary works as well as their interactive study are of fundamental importance for the
candidates’ performance in that type of question.
