Abstract:
Study about the works "Eurico, the presbyter", by Alexandre Herculano and "Memorial of the convent", by
José Saramago which sought to understand the process of fictional appropriation of the historical substance
in the context of the 19th and 20th centuries, observing the convergente and divergent points between the
two texts respecting to the narrative posture, in face of the historical clipping, assumed for the writer of each
of the works to be studied. Aimed, mainly, the accomplishment of a comparative study of the referred novels
by Alexandre Herculano and José Saramago, describing how occurs the articulation of the episodes and
historical characters in the fiction text. The work was developed from bibliography survey and from
consultations on electronic journals and virtual libraries in view of posterior academic-scientific productions.
The study, through the boarded thematic, emphasizes not just the important role that the historical novel
performs in the context of the Portuguese literature, as well as opens space for new researches on the
constant discussions about the boundaries between the historical and the literary in Portuguese literature.
