Resumo:
The family Convolvulaceae has great distribution of species in the world. In Brazil the species are represented mostly by genus Ipomoea. They inhabit various regions, from the interior of the forests to coastal regions. Many of them are described as natural plants that cause poisoning in experimental animals or livestock of interest, such as cattle, goats and sheep, causing a disease known as tremorgenic syndrome. The objective of this study was to review literature about the species of the genus Ipomoea, especially Ipomoea asarifolia and its toxic effects, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. The main characteristics of family, genus and species and their toxic effects on organisms have been reported. However, denote the absence in the literature studies that address the cytotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic damage of this kind.
