Resumen:
Sustainability is a topic that has been growing in recent years. Since the 1970s, it has expanded rapidly due to the environmental impacts caused by economic growth, mass production, and constant use of natural resources. In 2015, the United Nations agreed with its representative countries to a global pact signed in the 2030 Agenda, establishing a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Due to their potential to transform society, universities are recognized as catalysts. Mainly, federal universities assume greater responsibility due to their social mission. For this reason, researchers have been directing their studies focusing on Education for Sustainable Development (EDS) aimed at Higher Education. However, a literary gap was identified that helps university management to make universities sustainable organizations. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to propose a model for developing skills for sustainability in the direction of Federal Public Universities. An Inventory of Competencies for Sustainability was systematized, and a set of observable behaviors was proposed as competencies for individual evaluation. As for the assessment at the organizational level, a group of Competence Indicators for Sustainability was offered and validated by managers of federal universities. Finally, strategic guidelines were presented for the development of skills for sustainability to prepare university managers to implement the Sustainable Development Goals within the scope of federal universities. This is an exploratory, descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative research with theoretical, methodological, and practical contributions because it encompasses conceptual aspects insofar as it expands the methodological perspective with procedures that can contribute to the elaboration and execution of training programs for managers and conduct new research on this topic, and presents practical solutions for achieving sustainable universities.
