E-commerce has been gaining considerable space in the decisions of consumers and sellers.
For the companies, the greatest advantages on e-commerce are the reduced costs associated
with the broad reach of new customers, while for the consumers, the most important
advantages are the convinience, the price comparison and potential cost reduction. The
technological advance, the creation and popularization of smartphones certainly have
contributed to the start of e-commerce as a new business practice. The purpose of this article
is to analyse whether there was a change in the sales pattern on e-commerce in the USA in the
period when smartphones have became popular around the world. For this we used the
structural break test developed by Zeileis et al. (2002). The test result suggests that there were
structural breaks in the analyzed series. The advent of the smartphone, along with the
improvement of technologies, may have contributed to the change in e-commerce
participation in USA retail sales.
