Studies on the use of medicinal products shall provide an analysis of the use of medicinal
products in a population. From this perspective, the patterns of use, variations in therapeutic
profiles, the effects of educational, informative and regulatory measures are observed. The
objective of this study was to evaluate the profile of diabetes mellitus patients who are attended
by the basic pharmacy of the city of Cuité/PB, describing the socioeconomic characteristics of
the patients, the presence or not of risk factors that influence the onset of the disease, as well as
the degree of information on the use and correct storage of the drugs used in the treatment of
diabetes mellitus. This study was conducted from March to May 2019 and corresponds to a
cross-sectional, quantitative and descriptive study, whose sample was composed of 100 patients
with diabetes mellitus seen at the basic pharmacy of the city. A prevalence of females (62%)
was observed among the patients. Regarding the age group, 66% were 60 years old or older.
The majority of the interviewees (87%) stated that they followed a diet, as well as claiming that
they did not practice physical exercise (53%). 75% use insulin and 60% use other antidiabetic
drugs. The presence of family history (77%), non-alcohol consumption (94%), and the habit of
not smoking (85%) were prevalent. The majority reported having had guidance on the use of
medications (93%) and 91% improved their symptoms after adherence to treatment. Thus, it is
concluded the importance of the pharmacist, as well as other health professionals in the
dissemination of guidelines, aiming at the rational use of medications and better management
of the disease
