Abstract:
Despite the beneficial effects with prophylactic and curative purposes that drugs offer,
they can cause harmful reactions to individuals, due to the reactivity of their
metabolites, modifying their therapeutic effect. Hepatoprotective drugs are
responsible for preventing and mitigating damage against toxic agents. The objective of the study was
review and describe hepatotoxic and hepatoprotective drugs, and their respective mechanisms of
action. This is an integrative review of the literature, the research was carried out on databases
electronic data, using articles published in the last 5 years as inclusion criteria
and recognized scientific rigor. The main pharmacological classes responsible for causing
hepatotoxicity were: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antimicrobials, anticonvulsants
and antineoplastics, through direct and idiosyncratic mechanisms. Herbal medicines and
vitamins, were considered the best safe and effective therapeutic option when the objective
was the protection of liver cells. It can be concluded that there is a lack of scientific literature
complete information on hepatotoxic and hepatoprotective drugs.
