The present paper aims to present the correlation of existence that exists between ATER and PRONAF, making it clear that it is not possible to have one program without the direct participation of the other. With this, the analysis of the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (ATER) services, from its creation by the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA) for family agriculture, to the incentives provided by the government for PRONAF - National Program for Strengthening Family farming. In a comprehensive perspective on the role of family agriculture in rural development: acting as a food provider, ensuring environmental resources, generating jobs (direct and indirect), poverty alleviation and source of income for the poorest. The network of services that was organized with the institution of the National Policy of ATER (PNATER), composed of governmental, non-governmental and private organizations, will be observed. The concern that the ATER service is taking with family agriculture is the concern analyzed, which established two chapters as a trajectory. The first, will present a synthesis of the ATER service and its role in the expansion of innovation in Brazilian agriculture from the beginning to the last century. The second, will characterize the current moment of ATER services, focused on some parameters: scope, social participation; the education; and the public character of this service (under the bias of law and continuity, and evaluation). Performing a critical analysis on the current production developed in ATERs.
