Abstract:
The biological activity of natural products is recognized in Brazil and in the world. Apiculture products have been highlighted because they are easy to obtain and show numerous pharmacological properties. Propolis is a resinous material harvested by bees of different plant exudates, with the functions of sealing and protecting hives against the proliferation of microorganisms, among others. There are reports on propolis activities related to antimicrobial, healing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory action. Strains of Streptococcus in the oral cavity present resistance to multiple drugs, which increases the interest in the use of products of natural origin with pharmacological properties. The objective of the study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of the red propolis on strains of Streptococcus pyogenes; as well as to verify the interaction of red propolis extract in combination with antibiotics. The minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by the microdilution method in wells and served for evaluation of the substances as modulators of resistance to antibiotics. The microdilution assay did not demonstrate relevant antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes. In the evaluation of the modulatory activity, the synergistic action of the extract of the red propolis with amicacin, ciprofloxacin, oxacillin; in combination with benzylpenicillin, there was no synergistic effect.
