Propolis is a resinous and balsamic material collected and processed by bees from various plant sources, this product is made by bees with resins of trees, wax, pollen, fragments of vegetables and their own secretion. The chemical composition of propolis depends on the flora of the region where it is produced and from the time of the year in which it is collected. The chemical composition of propolis includes aromatic resins and balsams (50%), waxes (25% to 35%), essential oils (10%), pollen grains (5%) as well as phenolic compounds, minerals and vitamins. The Brazilian propolis was classified in 13 groups according to the characteristics found in the climate diversity of the country and the producing species. Based on this premise, the study aims to understand the different types of propolis and their indications. Methodologically, the research is a bibliographical review carried out through consultation in journals, national and international scientific articles, dissertations, monographs, theses and other academic productions that approach the theme in question. The search period focused on the months from April 2017 to April 2018. Faced with everything that has been exposed throughout the review, it is concluded that studies of this nature are necessary to serve as a basis for later research, whether experimental, laboratory or of field, aiming at a greater elucidation of the other varieties of propolis, since this material is very rich and can be explored by the most varied areas of knowledge.
