Resumo:
The oceans are vast bodies of saltwater that cover approximately 71% of the Earth's surface.
They play a crucial role in our biosphere and serve various essential functions for sustaining
life on the planet. Moreover, their prevalence makes oceanic waters vital elements for
numerous species. The aim of this study was to describe, based on the literature, the
conservation and preservation initiatives for the oceans, with a focus on the Brazilian context
within the global "Ocean Decade" movement. Data were collected between August and
October of 2023, from the official website "Década da Ciência Oceânica – Brasil” (Decade of
Ocean Science – Brazil), which outlines actions related to the "Ocean Decade" movement
declared by the United Nations in 2017, with an emphasis on activities carried out by Brazil.
The results obtained demonstrate that efforts and awareness campaigns regarding the Ocean
Decade Science movement continue to be developed within the GAMS. It is concluded that
there is a notable commitment to promoting and raising awareness about the importance of
oceans and marine life, although there is significant work to be done concerning our
responsibility for these ecosystems.
