Resumo:
The internalization of universities, especially from the Restructuring and Expansion of Federal
Universities - REUNI, was a program of the Federal Government that aimed, among other factors,
the expansion of federal university centers and the creation of new opportunities for residents away
from large urban centers . From this scenario, the Center for the Sustainable Development of the
Semi - Arid - CDSA was created in 2009 in the municipality of Sumé - PB, with the purpose of filling
socioeconomic gaps and offering public higher education to the population living in the Brazilian
semi - arid region. This research is inserted in a broad proposal of analysis of the socioeconomic
dynamics from the transformations that occurred in the Cariri region of Paraíba in recent years. Its
main objective is to examine the extent to which the CDSA / UFCG installation contributed to a
possible local development of the municipality of Sumé - PB, for this purpose, it was sought to
analyze and correlate the impact of the CDSA with the levels of local tax collection. For the execution
of the research, information available in the balance sheets was used in the portal of the National
Treasury Secretariat (STN). The proposed work addressed the analysis of economic indicators,
which extended between the time period from 2005 to 2012, considering the period before and after
the implementation of CDSA in Sumé. Thus, in the municipality of Sumé, the CDSA constitutes an
important entity that promotes transformations and delineates new economic and social relations.
