Resumen:
Our research seeks to comprehend, from a sociological perspective, the impacts that heteronormativity imposes on the lives of people who do not stand by the hegemonic standards of social action related to sexual orientation and gender identity. In order to the fulfillment of this research, we selected different authors’ works and researches focused on intersectionality, which is, questions related to processes of identity construction such as gender, class, ethnicity and generation. Our research seeks to be a contribution to the fight against gender violence, especially the violence suffered by the people from the LGBTQIA+ community. To execute this study, for methodological conveniences, we pitched on reconstructing the life story of Geni, a young travesti and sex-related worker who was murdered in Campina Grande, Paraíba, back in 2011. Geni’s life allowed our research to highlight social issues intertwined in the act of gender violence. We observed in our study that gender identity construction is permeated by prejudice, violence, poverty, disregarding of rights, among other aspects of the collective life. We identified these aspects in Geni’s life story. In order to collect empirical data, we chose methodological strategies of a qualitative nature: we interviewed people who were close to Geni, analyzed procedural records from the legal field, revisited news and information published by the press about Geni’s murder and the criminal processes of the crime executors.
