Resumen:
Taking a qualitative, descriptive approach, this paper is the result of a bibliographical
survey in which we looked at the concepts and conceptions of Scientific Literacy and
Literacy. The aim is to reflect on the understanding of these concepts and promote a
discussion about the needs of a scientifically literate society. At the level of the
individual, scientific literacy, as part of citizen education, seeks to develop criticality
and participation in decision-making processes. We conclude that, in order to
achieve an education along these lines, the teaching-learning process needs to go
beyond the pure memorization of mathematical concepts and formulas. We must
seek to understand the concepts and their applications in everyday situations, with a
view to social transformation through science and technology.
