The aim of this dissertation was to seek the laboratory profile in the area of hematology
10 and clinical biochemistry of horses acclimated in semi-arid tropical region. For this
11 purpose, it was divided into two chapters. Chapter I is an integrative systematic review
12 where we assess the potential for ESR sensitivity in the diagnosis of different
13 pathologies in horses. Therefore, a careful search was carried out in the Pubmed,
14 ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science and SciELO databases by randomized clinical
15 studies until 2021, which culminated in the literary review of five studies. We
16 evidenced five horse breeds evaluated through ESR methodologies that varied between
17 the standard Westergren method or the modified Westergren method, with the use of
18 different anticoagulants, such as: ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), citrate and
19 heparin. ESR showed diagnostic sensitivity and positive correlation with
20 complementary laboratory parameters, such as: hemoglobin, plasma proteins, leukocyte
21 count and red blood cell count. It is also highlighted the need for studies with other
22 races and modulations of stress and pathological conditions, in particular that cover
23 other nationalities and the peculiarities in which they are inserted. While Chapter II
24 demonstrates the broad biochemical and hematological profile of healthy horses from
25 the tropical semiarid region of Brazil where it was performed on animals subjected to
26 intensive rearing with protein supplementation. For this, an assessment of hematological
27 parameters (blood count, fibrinogen and vhs) and biochemical tests of liver function
28 (Albumin, Aspartate Aminotransferase, Alanine Aminotransferase, Bilirubin, Alkaline
29 Phosphatase, Gamma Glutamyltransferase, total proteins, renal function (Urea,
30 creatinine) were carried out ), muscle function (creatine kinase, Lactate Dehydrogenase,
31 Aspartate Aminotransferase), glycemic and lipid profile (Glucose, Cholesterol,
32 Triglycerides) and electrolyte profile (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium,
33 chlorine). In all hematological and biochemical parameters analyzed, the results
34 obtained were within the established reference values, despite slight oscillations, as
35 expected for healthy horses inserted under semi-arid geoclimatic conditions. The values
36 obtained for the hematological and biochemical parameters evaluated can be used in the
37 interpretation of laboratory tests of inserted horses under conditions similar to the
38 present study. It is concluded that in healthy horses under tropical and semi-arid
39 geoclimatic conditions they presented hematological and biochemical parameters within
40 the normality values pre-established in the literature, with slight oscillations probably
41 due to adaptive physiological processes.
