PREVALENCE AND RISK FACTORS TO Cysticercus tenuicollis IN GOATS
AND SHEEP AND PHYSICAL AND HYGIENIC-SANITARY CONDITIONS OF
THE SLAUGHTERHOUSES OF PARAÍBA STATE, NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL.
Abstract
This dissertation consists of two papers. The first chapter aimed to determine the
prevalence and risk factors of Cysticercus tenuicollis in goats and sheep of
Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil. Were inspected a total of 390 animals, 195
goats and 195 sheep. Being held visceral analysis for demand and determination
of the cysticerci predilection sites, which was directed to search for the omentum,
liver, gallbladder and other abdominal serous. For the evaluation of risk factors,
were applied to animal owners a semi-structured individually deal questionnaire
with the conditions of the properties, handling of animals and the knowledge of
C. tenuicollis transmission, hosts and damage caused. Were Identified a
prevalence of 39% (76/195) of C. tenuicollis in goats and 17.4% (34/195) in
sheep. The percentage of infection in goats was statistically greater to sheep (p
<0.05). However, the extensive management to sheep was the only statistically
significant variable considered to be a risk factor for infection of C. tenuicollis (p
<0.05). In the second chapter was evaluated the physical and sanitary conditions
of the slaughterhouses of Paraíba. The slaughterhouses of the three most
populous cities of each micro-region of Paraíba State, were selected. The visits
were conducted during the period from August to December 2014, being visited
those slaughterhouses possessing at least the Municipal Inspection Service
(MIS). In total, 66 slaughterhouses were visited in 65 cities, analyzing the
conditions of establishments, through a questionnaire containing information
about the facilities, local and hygiene of food handlers, killing procedures, use of
equipment, means of killing and final product storage conditions. It was observed
that the majority of establishments were in precarious operating conditions.
Concluding that the slaughterhouses of Paraíba does not follow the established
rules by specific legislation, causing great health risks to the population.
