Resumo:
The purpose of this work is to analyse and interpret three short-stories in João
Guimarães Rosa’s Primeiras Estórias, accentuating in each one of them essential aspects
of language dynamism. Specifically, we shall emphasize rhythm, syntactic inversions and
neologisms. Our first aim will entail, on a second plan, a textbook evaluation on the
presence or absence of those aspects of João Guimarães Rosa’s language dynamism. In
relation to language dynamism, we shall attempt to show that Rosa’s expressiveness is at
the service of an inversion of expectations, namely, the author’s innovations take on a
character of rebellion or sociohistorical unconformable ness. The emphasis given to the
manipulative or creative impulse does not necessarily imply moving into a metropolitan
setting; on the contrary, the prevailing scenery is the countryside and farms, and the
characters are also simple people, but densely constituted. In sum, the shift from a state of
traditional language to one which is revolutionary or innovative is characteristic of Primeiras
Estórias throughout. Moreover, in the three short-stories we selected, the dynamic
language structure is due to a change in the artistic composition and the author’s vision of
the world: the rhythm and poetic syntax seek a way out or an unexpected creative solution
to the conflicts which distress individuals in their diverse social categories. The solution to
this deadlock nears absurdity and madness, sagacity and disguise, sometimes leading to
intellectually dynamic creativity and to what we can call affective miracle.
