Resumo:
The price of the urban bus chassis has evolved lately, in Brazil, well above inflation. This fact has contributed to the fact that the price of the ticket rises above the capacity of payment of passengers by bus (which is largely the
work of this country) by squandering their income. It also contributes to rising cost of living and inflation, as well as to a cruel process of income distribution and resource allocation. In periods when the tariff pass-through does not occur there is a deterioration in the level of service, the main objective of the investigation is to explain why this can happen. The study is based on the analysis of time series
of the price evolution of the bus chassis most used to compose the urban vehicle, similar products, economic indicators and wages. It brings a panorama of the market and bus industry installed in the country necessary to understand the formation of
prices. The subject is approached for oligopolistic situations (especially regarding the existence of the "mark up"). In its conclusions, it attributes to the very special
structure of production and market of the country, of the good in question, as one of the causes that allow its prices to rise so much. It also addresses the consequences of this in public urban public transport. Finally, it presents recommendations that may contribute to reducing the effects of this distortion.
