Red propolis is a resinous product popularly consumed in Brazil, improves health and is considered a nutraceutical. Its botanical origin comes from the Dalbergia ecastophyllum (L) Taub, popularly known as the howler-tail, found in mangroves and coast of the sea and rivers, in the states of Alagoas, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Sergipe and Bahia, Northeastern Brazil . Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative non-fermentative bacillus present in several natural environments, such as soil, water, fruits and vegetables. It has high resistance to antibiotics, capable of infecting insects, animals and humans, in addition to minimal nutritional need. The general objective was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of paraiban red propolis on the Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain (ATCC27853). And specific, to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the red propolis extract; to verify the interaction of red propolis extract in combination with the antibiotics amikacin, benzylpenicillin, ciprofloxacin and oxacillin. The hydroalcoholic extract of propolis was diluted in Twim to 80% and sterile distilled water, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by the 96-well plate microdilution method. The subinhibitory concentration of the extract and the antibiotics were used in decreasing concentrations, starting from 1024 μg / mL, diluted sequentially up to 16 μg / mL. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA. The results of the tests showed that the extract of paraibanic red propolis does not have clinically relevant antimicrobial activity for P. aeruginosa (ATCC27853), since the MIC value was ≥ 1024 μg / mL. The antibiotics amikacin and ciprofloxacin demonstrated antibacterial activity against this strain, while benzilpenicillin and oxacillin were shown to lack this type of action. No synergistic effect was observed when the extract was associated with antibiotics. Due to the fact that the extract did not show antibacterial action on the aforementioned pseudomonas aeruginosa strain, the reasons for which it was not possible to report, it is suggested to identify the chemical components of the red propolis of Paraiba, as it may present variation due to the seasonality, collection period , different geographic origins, presence of contaminants, among others.
