Resumo:
The historical transformations that have taken place in the Brazilian agrarian space
have produced countless challenges for rural people. At different times, economic
factors, represented by the export market, which exploits and accumulates wealth,
have determined and influenced the most diverse changes throughout the national
territory, on different scales. This context includes coffee production in the District of
Mato Grosso, which, in much the same way as other production areas in Brazil, was
and continues to be marked by intense transformations and adaptations influenced
above all by the capitalist system of production, represented in this case by
production circuits. This structure, part of the dynamics of the market, drives and
amplifies, in different layers and stages of the production chain of various products,
the unequal conditions of profit distribution, subordination to capital and, in the
context of agricultural production carried out on small properties, changes in the
traditional characteristics of farmers. In view of this, this research aimed to analyse
the socio-spatial, historical and economic reorganisation of the District of Mato
Grosso, Rio de Contas - Bahia, with an emphasis on the dynamics of coffee
production, between 1970 and 2022, in the face of the influence of production
circuits. Based on a qualitative-quantitative methodology, using a sample survey of
farmers in the district, together with theoretical background studies, as well as
research with other subjects in the local production chain, and information collected
from secondary data, it was found that the active and cyclical changes in the local
coffee-growing and, more recently, fruit-growing agrarian space were intensively
marked by the actions of the production circuits, which are both present and
reproduced. These conditions have revealed the urgent and necessary introduction
of intervention measures, including the proposal to create a diversified rural
cooperative in the district, with the aim of establishing, in addition to breaking up part
of this structure, the search for farmers' autonomy, the unity and strengthening of
family production, and the feeling of belonging to the rural environment for rural
people.
