Resumo:
Bildungsroman, a literary genre originating in post-World War I Germany, initially focused on
the formation of national identity, has evolved into a universal narrative that explores the
growth and maturation of characters from youth to adulthood. This genre offers a rich lens for
analyzing issues of human development, identity and society in literary texts. Thus, this
article is the result of research that seeks to fill a gap in the analysis of the connection between
the Bildungsroman and The bicentennial man from 1976, by author Isaac Asimov,
highlighting the maturation journey of the protagonist Andrew Martin based on the principles
of Bildungsroman. Asimov is one of the greatest contemporary science fiction authors, and is
often revered for his contribution to the popularization of the genre. Aspects of the
Bildungsroman will be addressed, such as the search for identity and the discovery of
freedom, contributing to a deeper understanding of the work and the literary genre. The main
foundations can be found in Maas (2000), Lukács (2000) and Moretti (2020).
