Resumo:
The Festa do Rosário is a centuries-old festival that takes place every year in the city of Pombal,
representing a true manifestation of faith and devotion to the Virgin of the Rosary. This event
is not just a Catholic religious festival, as it mixes elements of Afro-descendant culture. After
the masses held during the novenas nights, the main attraction of the festival takes place:
performances by the city's folkloric groups. Namely: the congos, the pontoons, and the reisados.
This research seeks to analyze the construction of the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário in
Pombal, a city in the State of Paraíba, as a cultural, social and religious event, based on its
richness and folkloric diversity of African origins. To this end, it will rely on the large body of
production on the Rosary festival: Araújo, (1998, 1999, 2010, 2020, 2021), Ferreira (2014) and
Figueiredo (2014). Furthermore, we seek to understand the formation of the Irmandade do
Rosário and present the folklore groups mentioned, focusing on religious syncretism, using the
concepts of identity (ORTIZ, 1994) and representation (CHARTIER, 1991) as theoretical
support.
