Artificial stones are particulate composite materials with high content of natural
aggregates and a polymeric matrix, being widely used in civil construction. This class
of stone has been in increasing demand all over the world. Data from the Brazilian
Association of the Ornamental Stones Industry, ABIROCHAS, indicate a
considerable growth in national demand over the years. The objective of this
research is the production and physical-mechanical characterization of a polymer
matrix composite with sodium-calcium glass residue from domestic waste to be used
in internal environments in civil construction. The methodology comprises the
processing of the vitreous residues, their chemical characterization, composite
manufacture, plate and test specimens preparation and determination of the physico-
mechanical properties of the plates according to the ASTM and ABNT standards.
The composites reached an average stress at break of 14.0 MPa in compression and
of 6.1 MPa in flexural mode. The composites resulting from this work are
economically and environmentally justified by the low cost and reuse of waste.
Resulting in a new material at more competitive costs like waterproof coatings for the
construction market.
