To this end, we define the general objective: to analyze the lexical variation in cordel based on the historical formation of the Portuguese language, and the specific objectives: to briefly describe the historical formation of the Portuguese language; address lexical variation based on the cordel genre and propose a didactic sequence as a teaching proposal for the 7th year that addresses the importance of cordel for teaching Portuguese. The theoretical foundation is based on the contributions by Bagno (1999, 2007, 2012), Botelho (2013), Coutinho (2011) and others who discuss the study of language. The methodology used in this research was qualitative bibliographical, based on already published materials. As results of this research, we have the analysis of the lexical variation in the two cordels and the elaboration of a teaching proposal with the cordel genre, in order to insert and value popular culture in Portuguese language classes.
