Abstract:
This paper analyzes the formation of the Portuguese lexicon from its Latin origins. The aim is to understand the factors that have contributed to the Portuguese language having lexical varieties. In this sense, the general objective of this research is to show that the Portuguese language is rich in variations, and to understand how metaplasms contribute to understanding lexical variation. To this end, we have the following specific objectives: to analyze how the Portuguese lexicon was formedfrom the Latin language and its expansion throughout the Peninsula, to present linguistic variations and metaplasms, observing the etymological formation of words, and to contribute to the teaching of the Portuguese language, based on the historical course of the language. To this end, the theoretical basis used was Gonçalves and Basso (2010), Assis (s.d. ) and Bortoni-Ricardo (2021) with regard to the history of the the Portuguese language, Ilari and Basso (2021) with linguistic variation, Bagno (2007) who presents discussions on historical grammar through metaplasms, in addition to other contributions by Bagno (2009) and Bagno (2015) on linguistic variation and linguistic prejudice, and finally, with guidelines on language teaching the National Common Curriculum Base -BNCC (Brazil, 2018). The methodology used was bibliographical research with a qualitative approach, since written materials such as books were consulted.
