Resumo:
The pífano band, also called cabaçal, is one of the principal and genuine cultural marks of Brazilian
northeast and of the plural ethnic composition of the people from that region. This research presents
some reflections of concerning the cabaçal São Sebastião, from São José de Piranhas, a small city
located in the alto sertão paraibano. The general aim of the research, starting from that band´s
performance and repertoire, consists of pointing the characteristics which constitute the musical
territory of that cabaçal. Therefore, the methodological support contemplated a bibliographical
research which approaches areas such as, etnomusicology, anthropology, philosophy. Besides, the
investigation was found in a field research with participant observation, where it was possible to
collect sounds and images of the performance of the São Sebastião band, as well as to interview its
members. All of that material was important to the analyses, through that we could emphasize the
etnographic present time of that musical group. As a consequence, this research intends to contribute
for a reflection about the musical activities developed during centuries by the country people.
