Abstract:
Sexually Transmitted Infections are considered a serious public health
problem today. Given this, one of the groups that requires care is pregnant women,
since the vertical transmission of STIs such as HIV infection, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and
C are still characterized as a challenge for Brazilian public health. Since 2012, the
Ministry of Health has regulated STI testing for pregnant women undergoing prenatal
care in Primary Care, aiming for early diagnosis and treatment. Objective: To
understand how the dynamics of offering STI tests occur during prenatal care provided
by nurses in primary care in a city in Curimataú, Paraíba. Methodology: This is a
descriptive study with a qualitative approach, involving nurses working in nine Basic
Family Health Units in the city of Cuité-PB. Data collection took place after ethical
assessment and took place through audio-recorded interviews, with the help of a semi-
structured script, carried out between September and November 2023. After
transcribing the interview for Libre office, the data was processed in the Textual
Analysis software IRaMuTeQ®, using the Similitude Analysis method, allowing the
identification of links between words in the textual corpus based on co-occurrences
between them, after which they were subjected to Thematic Content Analysis. Results
and Discussion: The following thematic category emerged from the analysis: “Nurse
practice in coping with STIs in low-risk prenatal care”. It is discussed that the nurse's
care routine in low-risk prenatal care is marked by structural elements favorable to the
regular offering of tests for screening and diagnosis of STIs, as well as by subjectivities
that present themselves as a barrier to breaking the transmission cycle of these
infections. Final Considerations: The results of this study successfully achieved the
research objectives. In addition, they provide feedback to professionals on the
strategies implemented and what actions to take to ensure that prenatal care is even
more excellent.
