Abstract:
Peroxidases are important enzymes extracted from the most varied species of plants,
being used for the most diverse purposes. Among the various uses of peroxidase, its use
in the degradation of phenolic compounds for the preservation of aquifers and ecosystems
stands out, since phenols, released mainly in industrial waste, harm the environment.
Therefore, this Course Completion Work was based on the premise of agreement and
explanation, exposed by more current bibliographical surveys, on the importance of
extraction and purification methods of plant peroxidases, being justified by the relevance
of delving deeper into the proposed topic, to the understanding of the scientific bases that
corroborate essential characteristics of peroxidases as effective anti-polluting agents
against phenolic compounds. As for the objective, this research was aimed at describing
the techniques most used in recent years for the extraction and purification of the
peroxidase enzyme, as well as its use in the bioconversion of phenol. Having the specific
objectives: i) report the plant species most used in the extraction of POX; ii) provide
information on the most modern methods for purifying peroxidases; iii) present the
chemical processes involved in the enzymatic catalysis of phenolic compounds by POX;
iv) carry out a survey of authors and articles that resemble their research to the proposed
theme of this work. The result obtained from this work showed, based on comparisons
between articles published by authors who explored the benefits of peroxidase and its
extraction methods, the diversity and cost-benefit of the various extractive and
purification procedures, such as exchange chromatography ionic the gold standard in
peroxidase purification methods. Therefore, it was concluded that POX, easily obtained
and having unlimited sources, proved to be highly effective anti-polluting agents in
ecosystems harmed by phenolic substances of an industrial nature; and its extraction and purification methods as highly advantageous and effective for promoting environmental
protection in the face of industrial development in a given area.
