Résumé:
This master's thesis focuses on the need for basic education students to understand the
phenomenon of drought. To this end, an action-research project was carried out with students
from a 3rd year high school class at a public school located in the municipality of Afogados da
Ingazeira-Pernambuco, which is in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The aim of the research
activity was to analyze how literary literacy contributes to learning about the phenomenon of
drought in Geography teaching. The problem was posed by the difficulties that the students
expressed in understanding the characteristics and impacts relevant to understanding the theme,
which were evident during Geography lessons. In methodological terms, the work used action
research and the description of the results and activities made use of a qualitative approach. In
line with this methodology, the use of the literary text (O Quinze, by Rachel de Queiroz) was
proposed as the main source for investigating geographical knowledge. In this way, the
pedagogical practices were developed in a contextualized way in the class through three
didactic sequences involving the use of didactic materials and varied methodologies, but
prioritizing the use of literature so that this, in partnership with Geography, would provide more
meaningful teaching. We sought a form of teaching in which the students were not mere
receptors. To this end, during the sequences, problematizations were launched, interconnecting
and reflecting on their reality. The actions planned, developed and analyzed valued the
participation of teacher-students and students-students, promoting a dynamic and enriching
teaching-learning process. That said, we believe that the use of literary literacy to understand
the phenomenon of drought in Geography classes proves to be another way of understanding
the different dimensions and socio-environmental damage caused by meteorological drought in
the Brazilian semi-arid region.
