The inclusion of people with disabilities in higher education is a relevant topic today. This
work is research with a qualitative approach that aims to reflect on inclusive education based
on the experience of an extension project at a public university. Inclusive education at the
Education and Health Center at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) brings
together a set of actions such as student assistance policy organized and developed by
professionals from the Accessibility and Inclusion Center (NAI), as well as with partners and
institutional projects in extension and research. NAI professionals, together with students,
professionals from different sectors and areas of the academic community and the general
population, developed an extension project entitled "Chat about Inclusive Education". This
work deals with the experiences and perceptions of one of the undergraduate nutrition
students who actively participated in 2021. The objective of this work was to describe and
analyze the experiences and learning obtained during active participation in this project,
which had as its main focus promote relevant discussions about the importance of educational
and social inclusion of people with disabilities. The methodology to meet the objectives was
the production of everyday vignettes (which are authorial texts on how the author/researcher
perceives, reflects and understands lived experiences) based on the exercise of participant
observation, referring to everyday experiences. This method of recording and analysis was
due to its qualitative nature, which allows for detailed exploration of experiences in different
situations and contexts. In the extension project, activities were developed such as spaces for
debates to raise awareness and information about the inclusion of students with disabilities,
global developmental disorders and high abilities or giftedness in the academic context with
the entire community. Undergraduate students from different courses at the Center for
Education and Health participated in the extension. The project, starting in July 2021, through
online moments, then hybrid ones and moving on to face-to-face moments, addressed the
topics through conversation circles and multimedia strategy inclusive way and addressing the
themes. The everyday vignettes: Vignette 1 - The importance of inclusive education in higher
education; Vignette 2 - Ableism and the ethics that guide me: a process of awareness; Vignette
3: What do I want technology for?; Vignette 4: Prejudice; Vignette 5: Elucidating an
experience. This experience broadened the perspectives within health and nutrition training,
with the identification of challenges to the inclusion of people with disabilities in the
academic field, giving the chance to recognize the problems by the different subjects
involved, including from an institutional perspective. The themes of prejudice and recognition
of rights helped to identify how changes are necessary and significant for everyone involved.
In this way, inclusion is an important, transformative theme and refers to the adjustment of
social systems to respect human diversity, requiring the active collaboration of people and
institutions. Projects like this help in the training of more humanized professionals who are
attentive to equity.
