This research intends to observe how knowledge about the Latin language and the formative course of the Portuguese language are fundamental for the teaching and learning process, emphasizing how the diachronic study can be promising for the understanding of some linguistic particularities that can be observed in everyday uses. . In this sense, as a general objective to promote a comparative analysis of two Portuguese language textbooks of the 6th year of Elementary School, the first entitled “Portuguese Languages”, by the authors Willian Roberto Cereja and Thereza Cochar Magalhães, which was in force from 2017 to 2019 ; and the second “Portuguese Language” by the authors Cibele Lopresti Costa and Greta Marchetti, effective from 2020 to 2023, to understand how the process of word formation in the historical perspective of the Portuguese language was addressed in this material during the period and what possible changes can be observed. In addition, as specific objectives, we intend to present in general lines a contextualization of historical factors and their influences on the linguistic structure from Classical Latin to the formation of the Portuguese language in Brazil, as well as, to elaborate a didactic proposal aimed at the 6th year of Teaching Fundamental in order to contribute to teaching and learning. This research, therefore, is situated in a bibliographical analysis of a qualitative nature, which is based on existing theoretical discussions about the origin of the Portuguese language, as well as the word formation process and its influences on teaching. For that, we used as main theoretical supports the studies of Assis (2011), Bagno (2007), Coutinho (2011) and Teyssier (2001). From the development and contextualization of historical factors and their influences on the linguistic structure from Classical Latin to the formation of the Portuguese language in Brazil, this research resulted in a didactic sequence aimed at the 6th year of Elementary School, aiming to help the teaching work to from the historical perspective.
