Abstract:
This research aims to investigate, based on the discourses of teachers and administrators at the
Municipal Elementary School Firmo Santino da Silva, located in the Quilombo Caiana dos
Crioulos, municipality of Alagoa Grande-PB, what are the causes of the recurring, albeit not
very high, school dropout rates recorded in their unit. To do so, we raised the following research
questions: What elements contribute to the dropout process? What actions could provide a
differentiated perspective on these students who drop out and ensure their retention in school?
In order to answer these questions, we conducted a qualitative research study, in which we
conducted interviews and administered a semi-structured questionnaire to managers and
teachers at the aforementioned school. The analysis of the collected data was carried out in a
critically reflective manner, and we drew on several authors such as Pereira & Dias (2020),
Lopes (2010), Silva (2009), Cury (2002), Luciene Tavares (2021), Tardif (2010), Brasil (2012),
Baggi (2010), Morin (2001), and Vergutz (2013), who were essential for the foundation of this
research work. Therefore, school dropout still occurs in various educational spaces and,
regardless of the cause, it is extremely important that we seek to debate it in order to make
people aware of the importance of each person in minimizing this problem.
