Resumen:
The guiding principle behind this research is to validate and propose the idea of making
prisons sustainable by implementing environmental management systems integrated with
other systems, with the Procurador Romero Nóbrega Maximum Security Penitentiary located
in the city of Patos - PB as a starting point. The research introduces a new perspective to
studies on sustainable prisons as an alternative for the prison system. It is a master's
dissertation based on three scientific articles whose contents are related and complement each
other in the direction of an original proposal aimed at the field of study. To this end, the
methodology adopted in the research is classified as a case study of a qualitative nature, with
exploratory and descriptive objectives and bibliographical, documentary and field procedures.
In order to delve deeper into studies related to sustainable prisons, specifically integrated
management systems capable of contributing to prison sustainability, the research entered the
thematic field of the Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs and the Management Excellence
Model - MEG. With this in mind, this work aims to analyse how the Procurador Romero
Nóbrega Penitentiary in Patos - PB has internalized an integrated perspective of its
environmental management systems in its management practices, with a view to
sustainability. To this end, the dissertation aimed to map the most relevant studies on the
themes: Sustainable Prisons, Integrated Environmental Management Systems and
Sustainability Indicators; to evaluate the management and operational conditions of the
Romero Nóbrega Penitentiary in Patos - PB, as well as to show how integrated environmental
management in the penitentiary contributes to sustainability in prisons. The results were
distributed in three articles that formed the basis of the theoretical review of this dissertation,
generating a proposal for a new model of prisons for the penitentiary system, based on
sustainability. As a summary of the results obtained and the study's contributions, it should be
noted that in order to have an integrated management system that contributes to prison
sustainability, it is necessary to combine two mediating variables, which are the SDGs and the
Management Excellence Model (MEG), with efficient integration and capable of achieving
sustainability in all its essence: environmental, social and economic.
