Resumo:
The central theme of this work is the handicraft production of hammocks, which takes place in
a context that involves family tradition as a fundamental element in the relationships between
the members of the community studied. Thus, the general objective of this research is to
understand the place of the handmade production of hammocks in the social, economic and
cultural organization of families in the Taboado de Cima Community in Boqueirão-PB. The
theoretical framework was Araújo (1996), Cascudo (2012), Durkheim (1999), Fernandes
(2021), Keller (2014), Lopes (2013), Marx (2013), Sanson (2014). The methodology adopted
is qualitative, based on ethnography, with an emphasis on participant observation and semistructured interviews, containing questions about the organizational aspects of handmade
hammock production, socio-economic, historical and cultural aspects experienced by the
families in the community. With regard to the questions asked in the empirical research, the
role of the handmade production of hammocks in the social organization of families can be seen
in the tradition of family work linked to the transmission of knowledge that spans generations;
in economic organization, the handmade activity stands out for its importance in supplementing
the income of families in the community; in cultural organization, the handmade activity faces
challenges in terms of recognition and investment in local development.
