Resumen:
The construction of Basílica of Carmo started in the end of XVII century, on the land
originally occupied by one of the palaces of Maurício de Nassau, the “Palace of Boa Vista”.
After the expulsion of the ditches, the Carmelite Order received it in donation, and reformed of the use, at the beginning as hostel for the community that was forming in that place. The
construction lasted about seventy-seven difficult years, overcoming embargoes, political
conflicts and lack of resources for its conclusion. In the year of 1938, the Basílica was protected
as national historic and artistic heritage and since then has received some attention with regard
to issues of restoration and conservation of its structure. Through this search, we not only rescue
the history of its construction, but also highlight its importance as a monument, along with more
than three centuries of existence.
