Abstract

The right to housing is a human right guaranteed by the Brazilian Constitution; however, housing should not be understood solely as the physical space of shelter. Regarding the gender perspective, it is crucial to perceive housing as a space for daily experiences and the development of activities essential for life maintenance. This study aims to comprehend the violation of the right to housing based on the daily experiences of women living in the Aratu community in João Pessoa/PB. The goal is to characterize the aspects of vulnerability and social precarity, considering the levels of service availability, infrastructure, and public facilities, and how these aspects impact women's lives. It is an exploratory and qualitative-quantitative research based on data collection and field observations. The research is the result of the Final Course Project of the Architecture and Urbanism Course at the Federal University of Campina Grande and is associated with the INCT Observatory of Metropolises - Paraíba unit through the research project "Recognizing Precarious Settlements in João Pessoa and Campina Grande - PB," funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). This work contributes to the debate on the right to housing and gender, bringing visibility to the specific needs of women in the city, especially in informal settlements. Moreover, it has contributed to the development of a collaborative methodology that questions the challenge of building identification and characterization of popular territories through the collaboration of the communities themselves.
