This research is based on the following problem question: What is the approach to sensitive topics as a proposal for reading activities in a High School Portuguese Textbook? Among the objectives, the following stand out: General - analyze didactic-discursive strategies in reading activities on sensitive topics, namely: identity and mental health; and specific - investigate the didactic triggers used by the book under analysis to address reading issues on sensitive topics; situate the place of discursive genres as motivating mechanisms to discuss identity and mental health; and contribute to research that aims to train critical and responsive reading subjects. From a theoretical point of view, the research adheres to the contributions of the Bakhtin Circle and its promoters, as well as cultural studies such as Foucault (1994), Butler (2003), among others. When it comes to methodological issues, the work analyzed the Portuguese Textbook - Languages in Interaction – languages and their technologies, published in 2021 and approved by the National Textbook Program of the same year. The results reveal that, despite discussions on sensitive topics in the textbook, the approach, in the observed data, presents, for the most part, the discussion as a pretext, without problematizing or causing developments. This requires a lot of training from the teacher to expand what is presented in the teaching materials that circulate in classrooms in all corners of Brazil.
