Substations are fundamental to the electrical energy distribution and transmission system, contributing to the safe, reliable and efficient supply of electricity to homes, businesses and industries. This work aims to present the main theoretical concepts for understanding the calculation memory of essential equipment in substations, allowing us to understand the need and use of battery banks, auxiliary service transformers and emergency generators in substations, clarifying the services auxiliaries in a substation, differentiate the calculation of cables and triggers for continuous and alternating current, differentiate essential and non-essential loads in an electrical substation, and apply a calculation memory for the dimensioning of the mentioned equipment. To complete the work, a methodology based on the analysis of a typical substation model was adopted to create the calculation memory. The results of the work allow a basic understanding of the structure and functioning of a substation, without going into complex technical details.
