Resumo:
The fragility of the natural environment, in the face of actions for use and occupation of land and consequent
susceptibility to degradation processes are important factors that concern the processes of desertification, and the
fragility is primarily marked by climatic and edaphic local, and misuse of soil, naturally dry systems, is the main
precipitating factor of the degradation processes that make up the desertification. Paraíba is a leader in the ranking of
the states that most deforestation in the Northeast, in particular the Cariri, is mapped as a very serious degree of
desertification. The present work aims to estimate and evaluate the degradation of vegetation biomass of the Caatinga of
the municipality of Sumé-PB, through satellite images of medium spatial resolution using GIS. Using ERDAS to
generate the NDVI and SPRING for classification through LEGAL, performed the estimated volume of biomass of
woody vegetation and the rate of degradation of vegetation estimated loss of biomass. For this study it can be concluded
that the use of geotechnology was possible to map, classify and analyze satisfactorily the study area; With the
methodology used to estimate the degradation of vegetation through IDVL, it was found that 45.64% of the area are in
the process of biomass loss and degradation; By calculating the volume of vegetation biomass by VBVL, it could be
seen that the area of the municipality of Sumé is degraded, with 52.11% in case of loss of biomass.
