Resumo:
This research aims to problematize the trajectory of the homosexual movement in the city of
Juazeiro do Norte, starting with the assassination of the advertising executive, radio host, and
event producer João Vicente da Silva, better known as Jonathann Kiss, which occurred on
September 10, 2000. The death of Jonathann Kiss mobilized family, friends, the justice system,
as well as local and national media. The crime is part of a long trajectory of physical and symbolic
violence against homosexuals in the Cariri region of Ceará. However, the struggle to solve the
crime and for justice has transformed into a broader movement advocating for the life and rights
of the LGBTQIAPN+ community. Since 2000, a series of mobilizations have resulted in the
creation of various entities to protect the community, notably the Association for the Support
and Defense of the Homosexual Community of Juazeiro do Norte (AADECHO). From a
theoretical perspective, this study draws on issues raised by gender studies, contributing to the
awakening of the writing of the history of the long "heteronormative slumber" (Veras and Pedro,
2014). The research employed the methodology of oral history, through interviews with friends of
Jonathann Kiss and activists. In addition to the interviews, the work analyzes the criminal process
and follows the information and articles published in the newspapers Diário do Nordeste and
Jornal do Cariri. The mourning for the death of Jonathann Kiss turned into a fight for rights and
the construction of a political agenda for the homosexual movement in Juazeiro do Norte,
resulting in advances in the legal field through a series of laws that now protect the rights of the
LGBT+ community. Among the results of the investigation, the aim was to present the history of
the construction of the homosexual movement in Juazeiro do Norte, focusing on its main projects
and actions developed over two decades of activity, emphasizing how these actions were crucial for
the creation of a network of protection and support for LGBTQIAPN+ identities.
