Resumo:
This work investigated slavery in the representation of the character Bertoleza in the
work O cortiço, by Aluísio Azevedo. We start from the need to create a discussion on
the theme of slavery, addressed in the work O cortiço, based on an analysis of the
enslaved condition of the character Bertoleza. The research was carried out in light of
the reflections and analyzes of Azevedo (1997), Brait (1985), Candido (1987), Fanon
(2008), Mourão (1990), among other authors who contributed to the investigation.
From the analysis of the novel O cortiço we found that slavery, to this day, generates
discussion and criticism, according to the moment and the way in which and in which
it occurs. Thus, we hope that this character study of Brazilian Literature can contribute
to other provocations, questions and discussions for other researchers, as well as for
the analysis and criticism of literary studies.
