Resumen:
This study aims to understand the effectiveness of Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) for the
treatment of refractory symptomatic leiomyomas. It is a systematic review with a qualitative
approach and descriptive objective. The studies included in the review were selected from the
Cochrane, PubMed/Medline, and Virtual Health Library databases. The review followed the
following steps: formulation of the research question, selection of inclusion and exclusion
criteria, development of the search strategy, selection of eligible studies, quality assessment of
the studies, presentation of results, and writing of the discussion. The evidence showed that,
regarding the improvement of symptoms presented by the patients, the studies demonstrated
significant improvement in all cases, within varying time intervals post-procedure. Uterine
Artery Embolization emerges as an effective alternative in the treatment of symptomatic uterine
leiomyomas. The studies consistently show a significant reduction in symptoms related to
uterine fibroids after embolization. Therefore, it is understood that this minimally invasive
technique offers good resolution for the symptoms of refractory uterine leiomyomas. Compared
to invasive surgical approaches, it demonstrates superiority in terms of hospitalization time and
costs, actual surgical time, and quicker return to work activities.
